An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad accepted President Arif Alvi’s motion, in which he requested that the constitution’s immunity from prosecution be waived.
On March 15, 2022, the court will rule on the acquittal petitions filed by the president and other Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) officials, including some federal ministers, in the parliament attack case.
President Alvi went to the ATC a few days ago and informed it that he did not want to apply the immunity provision in the case because, after researching Islamic law, he had come to the opinion that it was un-Islamic.
Federal ministers Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Pervez Khattak, Asad Umar, and Shafqat Mehmood, as well as other PTI leaders Jahangir Khan Tareen, Khurram Nawaz, Saifullah Niazi, and Ejaz Chaudhry, have filed acquittal motions in the court.
On October 29, 2020, the court acquitted Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was the PTI chairman at the time of the attack on parliament.
