The main suspect in the murder of journalist and Samaa TV senior producer Athar Mateen was shot and killed in an encounter with police near Qambar Shahdadkot early Tuesday.
The incident was the outcome of a joint operation by Karachi West and Qambar police after receiving a tip-off about the presence of the accused, who opened fire as soon as he observed the police team, according to police authorities.
Accused Athar Mateen, a journalist, was shot by Anwar Husni. On February 26, his accomplice was also apprehended.
According to police sources, there is a Rs2 million reward for information leading to Anwar Husni’s arrest.
According to Anwar Husni’s criminal record, which was obtained by the 24News TV channel, there were 13 cases filed against him in Karachi’s various police stations.
The accused has been arrested three times before for a variety of offences including dacoities, murder, and other felonies.
The suspect, who was apprehended on Saturday, was brought before an anti-terrorism court on Monday, where he was remanded in police custody until March 11 for further investigation.
The suspect, Ashraf, was brought before the court and ordered to be held in custody. He was transported to the court in an armoured personnel carrier (APC) with a towel covering his face.
Unidentified armed men opened fire on a vehicle in Karachi’s Nazimabad neighbourhood on February 18, killing Athar Mateen as he attempted to stop a mugging attempt.
