Karachi introduces charges for underground water usage.
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced that there will be no free underground water for Karachi residents and commercial companies and charges have been fixed to access it.
The new regulation will come into effect on August 1.
According to the KMC notification, digital water meters will be installed across Karachi to measure the consumption of underground water.

The new regulation applies on corporations, commercial enterprises, water bottling and packaging companies, educational institutions, hotels, restaurants, and manufacturing and processing units.
Residential complexes, societies, apartments, and flats will also be added in the metering system.
However, individual residential houses will not be included.

Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Mayor Karachi, estimated that this step will generate almost Rs 1 billion in annually.
He said that monitoring water usage is very essential, particularly in industries, to ensure efficient resource management.

Karachi receives 550 million gallons of water daily, worth approximately 4.5 billion rupees, according Barrister Wahab.
We have registered 3,200 of the city’s 5,500 water tankers to stop water theft, and the remaining 2,300 tankers will be registered soon, he added.
