In the wake of Pakistan’s disappointing start in the T20 World Cup 2024, Ahmed Shehzad has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of captain Babar Azam.
Following consecutive defeats to the USA and India, Shehzad has publicly questioned Babar’s leadership and performance on a popular Pakistani television channel.
Questioning Babar Azamβs Performance:
Shehzad highlighted Babar Azam’s lackluster statistics in high-stakes tournaments, claiming that the skipper averages just 27 in T20 Internationals during significant events.
“Ever since Babar became captain, we have been losing to mediocre teams,” Shehzad remarked in a video that has since gone viral.
He suggested that these ongoing issues were bound to surface sooner or later.
Criticism of Veteran Players’ Role in Key Matches:
In his critique, Shehzad did not spare the team’s veteran players, asserting that they should have taken charge during critical moments, such as the recent match against India, where Pakistan failed to chase a modest target of 120 runs.

“There are players who have been part of the team for the last 4-5 years. Wasn’t it their duty to ensure that we chased down 120 in such an important match?” Shehzad asked, pointing out a perceived lack of responsibility among senior players.
Accusations of Misleading the Public:
Shehzad accused the team of deceiving the public by performing well against weaker opponents.
He claimed that Babar Azam’s T20I runs often come in losing causes, which places him third globally in this category.

“Your scores in big competitions…your average is 27 and strike rate is 112. And 1400 of your runs have come in a losing cause, which is at No. 3 in the world in that list,” Shehzad noted, questioning the true value of Babar’s contributions.
Allegations of Nepotism in Team Selection:
As Ahmed Shehzad blasts Babar Azam in fiery rant, he further alleged that Babar has been favoring his friends in team selections, compromising the overall performance and integrity of the squad.
“You have fooled the entire public. You are making a team with your friends, keeping your friends in the team,” Shehzad claimed, suggesting that such practices were detrimental to Pakistan’s cricketing success.
