US blocks UN resolution to recognize Palestine.

The United States exercised its veto power to block a resolution seeking Palestine’s membership in the organization, despite strong support from the majority of Council members in a recent Security Council session at the United Nations.

Reports indicate that 12 Security Council members were in favor of granting Palestine UN membership during the meeting, but the US vetoed the request.

Abstentions from the UK and Switzerland:

The session also saw the United Kingdom and Switzerland abstaining from voting on the resolution, further highlighting the complexities and divisions within the Council on this issue.

Palestinian Condemnation and Resolve:

Following the American veto, the Palestinian Presidency swiftly condemned the decision, labeling it as unfair and unethical.

Palestinian representative Riyad Mansour responded emotionally, asserting that Palestinian determination cannot be subdued and that efforts towards their cause will persist.

Israeli Support for US Veto:

Conversely, the Israeli Foreign Minister welcomed the US veto, stating that the Security Council’s rejection of the resolution sends a clear message that a Palestinian state should not be “rewarded for terrorism.”

The Israeli representative also criticized countries that supported the resolution, pointing out that Palestine already holds non-member observer status at the UN and requires broader support for full membership.

UN Secretary-General’s Warning:

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had previously warned of heightened risks of violence if progress towards a two-state solution was not achieved, underscoring the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Casualty Figures:

As US blocks UN resolution to recognize Palestine, in a notable disclosure, it was mentioned that since the conflict began on October 7, Israel reported to have killed 34,000 Palestinians.

This statistic shows the devastating toll of the ongoing hostilities in the region.
