Punjab government bans use of plastic bags from June 2024. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has greenlit a ban on plastic bags across the province.

This significant decision was made during a meeting chaired by Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.

Implementation and Timeline:

The ban on plastic bags is scheduled to take effect from June 5, as part of the provincial government’s efforts to curb plastic pollution.

The initiation of this policy coincides with international Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, which will mark the launch of the “Say No to Plastic” campaign in Punjab.

Stringent Restrictions:

Senior Minister Aurangzeb emphasized that strict measures will be implemented to control the production, transportation, and usage of plastic bags throughout Punjab.

The approval from the chief minister underscores the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Public Awareness and Alternatives:

Aurangzeb urged the public to prioritize their health by avoiding plastic bags, citing the associated risks of cancer.

Instead, she encouraged the use of cloth and paper bags as eco-friendly alternatives.

Shopkeepers were also called upon to actively participate in supporting the government’s campaign against plastic bag usage.

Enforcement and Education:

As Punjab government bans use of plastic bags from June 2024, during the meeting, it was agreed that relevant authorities would ensure the effective enforcement of the ban on plastic bags.

Additionally, educational institutions will play a pivotal role in raising awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic on health and the environment through special lectures and training workshops.
