Afridi revealed that he had advised Shaheen against assuming the captaincy of the Pakistan Super League franchise Lahore Qalandars, aiming to shield him from the pressures associated with leadership roles.
The veteran cricketer highlighted the challenges faced by former captains, including himself, suggesting that their tenures often ended unfavorably.
“I want Shaheen to focus on his own cricket,” Afridi said in a statement, adding that the left-arm pacer didn’t heed his advice against accepting captaincy of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Lahore Qalandars.
“I always tried to keep Shaheen away from captaincy,” Afridi added.
Reinstatement of Babar Azam
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently reinstated Babar Azam as the captain for T20Is and ODIs, replacing Shaheen Afridi.
The PCB cited strategic reasons for the change, emphasizing player well-being and performance, especially for fast bowlers.
Background of Leadership Changes
Shaheen Afridi had been appointed as the T20 captain following Babar Azam‘s resignation from the position last year due to the team’s subpar performance in the 2023 Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup.
