Cabinet approves work on delayed Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline project. The Cabinet Committee on Energy has greenlit the commencement of work on an 80-kilometer segment of the Iran-Pakistan Gas pipeline within Pakistan’s borders.

This significant infrastructure endeavor, slated to stretch from the Iranian border to Gwadar in its initial phase, received approval based on recommendations by the Ministerial Oversight Committee for the IP Project.

This committee, established by the Prime Minister in September 2023, played a pivotal role in assessing the project’s feasibility and strategic importance.

Under the auspices of Inter State Gas Systems (Pvt) Ltd., the execution of the project will be financed through the Gas Infrastructure Development Cess.

With unanimous support from all pertinent divisions, the project’s advancement is poised to address Pakistan’s escalating energy demands and ensure uninterrupted gas supplies to its populace.

Beyond bolstering Pakistan’s energy security, this initiative is anticipated to buoy local industries by guaranteeing augmented gas provisions.

Moreover, its ripple effects are expected to catalyze economic growth in Baluchistan province, thus contributing significantly to Pakistan’s broader economic advancement.

However, amidst these positive developments, recent warnings from Iranian authorities have cast a shadow over the project’s trajectory.

Islamabad has been cautioned of potential repercussions, including an $18 billion penalty, should the project falter in the face of US sanctions.

As cabinet approves work on delayed Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline project, stakeholders remain keenly observant of its implications for the nation’s energy landscape and geopolitical standing.
