ECC approves massive gas price hike. In response to economic pressures and demands from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the caretaker government has announced a significant hike in gas prices, stirring concerns among the populace and various sectors of the economy.

The decision, taken during a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) chaired by Finance Minister Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, will see both protected and non-protected consumers facing increased tariffs.

Protected consumers, falling within the first four slabs of gas usage, will experience a varying degree of hikes, while non-protected consumers will also witness tariff increases based on their consumption levels.

Notably, sectors such as roti tandoor, commercial, power, and cement have been exempted from the tariff hikes, signaling an effort to mitigate the impact on crucial industries.

However, the fertilizer industry and compressed natural gas (CNG) sector are among those set to bear the brunt of the price adjustments.

Furthermore, the ECC approved adjustments in gas prices for specific fertilizer companies, including Engro and Fauji fertilizers, with the impact of reduced tariff hikes for protected domestic consumers also extending to these plants.

In tandem with the gas price hike, the ECC also deliberated a proposal from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) regarding the rationalization of sales tax on locally manufactured vehicles.

This move underscores ongoing efforts to streamline taxation policies, potentially aimed at bolstering revenue streams amidst economic challenges.

The decision to increase gas prices comes amid a broader economic crisis, with the government facing pressure to meet IMF benchmarks by the February 15 deadline.

While these measures may aid in addressing fiscal concerns, the burden on consumers and sectors reliant on gas remains a point of contention.

As ECC approves massive gas price hike, the move is expected to have far-reaching implications on household budgets and industry operations.
