A notification issued by the Punjab Health Department confirmed the ban on these medications, which are manufactured by four prominent pharmaceutical companies: Alpharma, Zee Laboratories, Texcol Pharmaceuticals, and Virol Pharmaceuticals.
The prohibition stems from the discovery of substandard ethanol in the composition of these cough syrups, a revelation made by officials from the Drug Testing Laboratory.
This substandard ethanol content poses a considerable risk to public health, potentially leading to serious health issues among consumers.
The banned syrups, widely used by patients dealing with chest infections, cater to a range of conditions including allergies, cough, vomiting, and liver inflammation/hepatitis. To enhance public awareness and safety, health officials in Punjab have disclosed the names and badge numbers of the prohibited syrups.
The affected products include Allpherne (Badge No: 3002), Zevirol (Badge No: 3266 and 3267), Texcol EX (Badge No: 09953), Virol (Badge No: 35080), Thorax (Badge No: 23-110), Asthanail (Badge No: 23-30), Bronyl (Badge No: BL013), and Specize (Badge No: 276).
In tandem with the ban, stringent directives have been issued to drug regulators, instructing them to promptly seize the specified syrups from pharmacies and medical stores.
