Punjab unveils new financial package for civil servants who die while in service. In a significant move, the Punjab government has unveiled a substantial augmentation in the financial aid package allocated to the families of civil servants who meet an unfortunate demise while in the line of duty.
The decision, stemming from a meeting held on November 11, 2023, was formally communicated through a notification issued by the provincial Finance Department on Wednesday.
Under the revamped financial assistance structure, the amount dispensed to the families is contingent upon the basic pay scale of the deceased civil servant:
- BPS 1-4: Families falling into this category will witness a notable increase, with the financial aid soaring to Rs5 million, a substantial rise from the previous Rs1.60 million.
- BPS 5-10: A commendable elevation sees the financial aid climbing to Rs7.5 million from the previous Rs1.90 million for families in this pay scale.
- BPS 11-15: Families of civil servants in the 11-15 pay scale will now be eligible for Rs10 million in financial assistance.
- BPS 16-17: The financial aid package for this category has been significantly boosted to Rs15 million.
- BPS 18-19: Families of officers falling within the BPS 18 and 19 brackets will now receive a substantial Rs20 million in financial support.
- BPS 20 and above: Officers in this higher pay scale will also be entitled to a financial package of Rs20 million in the event of their demise while in service.
It is noteworthy that alongside this increase, the government has decided to discontinue a previous policy. Under the now-defunct policy, a child or widow of the deceased servant was appointed in BPS 1 to 11 on a contract or regular basis, following the provisions outlined in Rules 17-A of the PCS (A&CS) Rules, 1974.
As Punjab unveils new financial package for civil servants who die while in service, this move reflects a comprehensive reevaluation of the support structure for the families of civil servants who make the ultimate sacrifice in the course of their public service.
