ISLAMABAD: Pakistan imported $8 billion worth of wheat, sugar, cotton, edible oil, and other agricultural goods last year, according to a subcommittee of the National Assembly’s Special Committee on Agricultural Products.
Shandana Gulzar, the subcommittee’s convenor, presided over the meeting. Nafisa Inayatullah Khattak, Ayesha Ghous Pasha, and others were present at the conference. The “Agriculture Growth Strategy” was discussed at the meeting.
During the discussion, consultant Farrukh Ansari emphasised the importance of focusing on livestock and horticulture. According to Ansari, the agriculture sector could be enhanced if seed quality and pesticides were upgraded.
Ansari also stated that agricultural products worth more than $8 billion were imported last year, including wheat, sugar, cotton, and edible oil. Crop insurance was also a major concern, according to the expert. “We face a hurdle in incorporating or prioritising agricultural short-term goals.”
Shandana Gulzar stated that the committee would play a role in raising the agriculture sector’s development budget in the future.
