Japanese mountaineer dies during the Virgin Peak expedition in Pakistan.
A Japanese mountaineer died and another was injured after they were hit by an apparent rock fragment during a trip to the previously unclimbed Virgin Peak in northern Pakistan.
The two were part of an expedition organized by a local travel operator in the Andaq Valley in Pakistan’s northwestern region, according to Alpine Club of Pakistan Secretary Karrar Haidri.
Shinji Tamura fell while ascending the mountain on Friday at an altitude of 5,380 metres (17,650 feet), he said, adding that Tamura’s companion mountaineer Semba Takayasu was also hurt when he was hit by apparently a piece of rock.
Haidri stated Takayasu, on the other hand, managed to return to the base camp and request assistance from local authorities in rescuing his comrade.
He stated that a search team was soon dispatched to the scene of the accident, but Tamura was not found until Monday when the operation was called off. The Japanese climber was later declared dead by officials.

Tamura was critically hurt when he slipped and fell at a high height, according to Japanese climber Semba Takayasu. He claimed that despite days of searching, the body of a fellow climber had not been recovered.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Embassy in Japan conveyed heartfelt condolences on the tragic death of Japanese mountaineer Shinji Tamura. He died while ascending uncharted heights of virgin peaks in Pakistan.
“We offer our sincere condolences to the family and the people and the Government of Japan. Our thoughts and prayers are also with his fellow Japanese mountaineer Semba Takayasu who has sustained injuries during the climb,” the statement reads.
