Tesla launches new models S, X at cheaper prices in the US.

Tesla has launched two less expensive, shorter-range variants of its model S car and model X SUV in the United States, continuing its focus on lowering costs to prioritize sales growth.

The new S and X “standard range” models will be available between September and October 2023, with prices starting at $78,490 and $88,490, respectively — roughly 10% less than the previous lowest-cost models.

The least expensive cars have a “pearly white” exterior and an all-black interior; other colors are more expensive.

The maximum driving range of the new model S is 320 miles (515 kilometres), which is less than the maximum driving ranges of the basic and performance trim levels, which are 405 and 396 miles, respectively.

The new model X SUV’s range is significantly less than that of its basic and performance trims, which can travel up to 348 miles and 333 miles, respectively.

As Tesla launches new models S, X at cheaper prices in the US, it did not respond immediately to a request for comment on the new models.

In an effort to fend off rivals and uncertain economic conditions, the Austin, Texas-based automaker has lowered prices in the United States, China, and other regions, as well as provided various incentives to reduce inventory, since late last year.

On Monday, the company lowered prices for its model Y long-range and performance variants in China, sending shares lower on concerns that profit margins would be squeezed further.

The latest moves come as the automaker prepares to deploy its long-delayed Cybertruck for the first time and works to complete a facility in Mexico dedicated to a mass-market EV that will serve as the foundation for a robo-taxi.

Tesla’s newest products are the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover vehicles, while the S and X versions were introduced in 2012 and are more expensive.

The company delivered 19,225 model X and S vehicles in the second quarter of this year, up from 16,162 in the same period last year.
