Fear looms again on minorities in Pakistan after killing of pastor

PESHAWAR: Pastor William Siraj’s final rites were performed at the All Saints Church inside the Kohati Gate in Peshawar on Monday. He was shot dead by unidentified gunmen the day before.

The funeral was attended by a great number of women, men, and elders from the Christian community.

The funeral was held in a sad atmosphere as the minority community bid farewell to their religious leader. They asked that the assassination’s perpetrators be harshly punished by the relevant authorities.

Pastor Siraj was killed and one of his companions was injured by unidentified motorcyclists in Peshawar on Sunday, provoking protests from the city’s religious minority community.

The event, which occurred along the Chamkani Ring Road, aroused fears of targeted killings and a resurgence of terrorism in the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

It’s worth remembering that police officers and members of religious minorities have already been attacked in the city.

Pastor Siraj, a native of Kohati, was going home via Ring Road with his buddy Patrick when two unidentified men on a motorcycle approached his car near Madina Market and opened fire on him, according to police at the Chamkani Police Station.

The priest died as a result of the attack, while Patrick was injured.

A large contingent of police went to the scene as soon as the incident was reported. They later handed over the deceased’s body to his heirs after a postmortem investigation.

An investigation team from the police department gathered evidence from the crime scene and took eyewitness accounts.
