Indian surgeon revives ‘medically dead’ passenger mid-air. A cardiovascular surgeon became a real-life hero in a remarkable display of medical expertise and quick response when he rescued a fellow passenger who had been medically dead for some time with no pulse, no heartbeat, and no brain response.
Dr. Deepak Puri, a senior cardiovascular surgeon from Chandigarh, skillfully administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to resuscitate a 57-year-old diabetic who had collapsed on an Air India flight from Tokyo to New Delhi.
Following Dr. Puri’s advice, the plane made an emergency landing in Kolkata, where the patient was quickly transferred to a hospital. For five hours, the medical team and crew members worked tirelessly to stabilize the patient and ensure his condition remained stable until the flight arrived at its destination.
As an Indian surgeon revives a ‘medically dead’ passenger mid-air, Dr. Puri told the Indian media that the patient had been medically dead for some time, with no pulse, heartbeat, or brain response.
He emphasized that in such situations, irreversible brain damage can occur within three to five minutes if immediate medical assistance is not obtained.
Dr. Puri was on his way back from Tokyo after attending the prestigious two-day Cardiomersion World Heart Congress when he acted to save the passenger’s life. The fact that the incident occurred over the sea and the flight was approximately five hours away from the nearest available airport exacerbated the situation.
The airline obtained special permission to land at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport almost immediately. The patient was immediately taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital after landing, where an emergency procedure successfully addressed the complication.
