The legacy verified Twitter blue tick from all accounts was removed by the microblogging platform on Thursday.
Only those paying for Twitter Blue tick, which costs USD 8 per month via the web and USD 11 per month via in-app payment on iOS and Android, have verified blue checkmarks for their individual Twitter accounts.
As a result of the most recent development, a number of B-town celebrities, including Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, and politicians like Yogi Adityanath, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, as well as cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, among others, have lost their verified blue ticks from their Twitter accounts.
According to a previous announcement, Twitter will no longer display the verified checkmark next to any accounts that were recognised as notable before Elon Musk acquired the company, unless those accounts have a Twitter Blue or Twitter Verified Organisations subscription, according to Variety.
The blue tick was initially used to safeguard famous people from imitation and combat misleading information.
Twitter said earlier in March that they would start winding down their legacy verified programme and remove legacy verified checkmarks on April 1. People can sign up for Twitter Blue to keep their blue checkmark on Twitter.
In order to make it easier for users to tell which accounts “of public interest” on Twitter are legitimate and which are fake or parody accounts, Twitter originally launched the blue tick mark system in 2009. Previously, the company didn’t charge for verification.
Within two weeks of the acquisition of the firm last year, Musk introduced Twitter Blue, which included the check-mark emblem as one of the deluxe benefits.
