Man posing rich cheated women for lakhs on matrimonial site. A 26-year-old man was arrested on Friday for allegedly defrauding women on a matrimonial website by posing as a highly wealthy bachelor, according to Delhi Police.
Vishal, an Uttar Pradesh citizen, pretended to be a wealthy bachelor looking for a suitable spouse. He used luxury cars to “impress” the women, they claimed, and he even claimed to own homes and farmhouses near Gurgaon.
According to the authorities, he reportedly induced the women to transfer money under the guise of obtaining iPhones at a lower cost for them.
Vishal holds a professional degree and has experience working for an MNC. He also launched his own company. He chose to cheat ladies in order to get some quick money after experiencing losses in his business enterprise, according to the police.
As a man posing rich cheated women for lakhs, one of the victims who had been defrauded of 3.05 lakh rupees reported the incident to authorities at Keshavpuram police station in northwest Delhi.
The woman and her parents had made a profile on a matrimony website. The woman worked at an MNC in Gurugram. She came across the profile of a man who claimed to be an HR expert with an annual income of between 50 and 70 lakhs while searching for potential matches.
Her family liked his profile and sent him a request. After exchanging phone numbers, the woman started chatting with him on WhatsApp and Instagram.
“In March 2023, he sent her pictures of expensive cars and asked her (for her) choice. He showed (pictures of) some villas and farmhouses as his properties in Gurugram in order to impress her. He also projected his well-off business of food chain in Gurugram,” the woman alleged in her complaint.
He gained the woman’s family’s trust along the process, and they chose to meet him.
In order to make a profit, he also persuaded the woman to purchase an iPhone 14 Pro Max by offering to buy it for less. She claimed that he also persuaded her to purchase phones for her family and friends.
Influenced by him, the woman transferred ₹ 3.05 lakh to him through UPI in eight transactions.
But after receiving the cash, he banned her on social media and told her he had been in an accident and had been sent to a hospital in Jaipur. He stopped returning her calls, and after a few days, the victim realized she had been robbed, according to the police.
A police dummy sent the man a request on the same website a few days after receiving the complaint, according to deputy commissioner of police for the Northwest Jitendra Kumar Meena. He agreed to the request and began to exert similar control over the decoy.
However, after the decoy asked him to meet, the police caught the man.
“During interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in the cheating. He disclosed that after completing his BCA and MBA from Delhi, he worked as an HR professional at an MNC in Gurugram in 2018. He left the job in 2021 and opened a restaurant in Gurugram but that venture was not successful,” Mr Meena said.
Vishal allegedly created a profile on the matrimonial site and posed as a rich bachelor. He also hired a luxury car for 15 days through an app for ₹ 2,500 a day to keep up the pretense, the official added.
The police are making efforts to trace Vishal’s possible involvement in other similar complaints. They are also scrutinizing his bank account details.
