No pension for 34 years govt service

A university professor who had his services regularized after 37 years filed a case for pension benefits, and the Sindh High Court on Monday postponed making a decision.

Judge Iqbal Kulhoro of the SHC heard Arifa Siddiqui’s plea.

The petitioner’s attorney informed the court that Ms. Siddiqui had been a professor at Karachi University for the last 34 years. Nonetheless, she was employed under contract, and her services weren’t regularized until 2018.

The Karachi University was not providing her with the pension benefits, according to attorney Dr. Rana, since her client’s services had only been regularized five years prior.

The judge asked the university registrar why they regularized the services of a teacher in 2018 when she had been working there since 1987.

The judge remarked that the Supreme Court in its judgment had ruled that the past service years of the contractual employees should also be taken into account.

The lawyer pleaded with the court to announce its verdict in the case as an 18-member syndicate of the university would have to decide about the service years of a contractual employee.

The court, however, reserved its judgment.

The High Court of Sindh is the highest judicial institution of the Pakistani province of Sindh. Established in 1906, the Court is situated in the provincial capital Karachi.
