The death toll from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6 has surpassed 41,000, which is a shocking number. Since then, a large number of celebrities have offered assistance to tragedy victims. Turkish chef Nusret Gokce, better known as Salt Bae, has also joined the list and is keeping to his vow to feed at least 5,000 survivors each day.

Salt Bae serves free meals to 5000 Turkey quake victims. The well-known chef posted a video on Instagram of a food truck bearing the name of his restaurant handing out bowls of hot meals to countless individuals. “We started serving hot food to more people, targeting 5000 people every day. We started serving hot meals for 5000 people and more,” explained Nusret.

Prior to this, Nusret also posted a picture of a mobile kitchen that would reach earthquake-hit areas. “It will be the most important and meaningful service in the world for us,” wrote the restauranter in his post. The combined death toll in Turkey and Syria has climbed to more than 41,000, and millions are in need of humanitarian aid, with many survivors having been left homeless in near-freezing winter temperatures.

The priority right now is assisting the survivors, and it will be challenging for health officials to prevent illnesses because many of the sanitation facilities in the region were destroyed or rendered useless by the earthquakes. Although acknowledging issues with the initial response to the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that occurred early on February 6, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan now claims that the situation is “under control,” according to Reuters. “We are facing one of the greatest natural disasters not only in our country but also in the history of humanity,” Erdogan said in a televised speech in Ankara.
