ISLAMABAD: Dr Sania Nishtar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, informed the heads of foreign missions in Islamabad on the ‘Declaration on Establishing a Global Social Protection Knowledge Platform’ on Monday at the Foreign Office.
The proclamation is being led by Pakistan in New York, in partnership with a “Group of Friends on Social Protection” that includes Costa Rica, Nigeria, and Turkey, and is backed by the World Bank, according to a statement from the Foreign Office.
Dr. Nishtar introduced the declaration and informed the audience about the Global Social Protection Knowledge Platform’s conceptualization and operationalization. She emphasised that the significance of social protection was highlighted during the Covid-19pandemic.
“Countries with strong social protection systems, such as Pakistan, are better able to contain the pandemic’s consequences than other countries.” “There is a need to fill the knowledge gap in the global social protection landscape in order to benefit from each other’s experiences and share best practises,” she said.
In his opening remarks, Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood emphasised the briefing’s goals, stating that there is a greater awareness now of the need to expand investments in social safety systems to protect people from the pandemic’s shockwaves and future crises.
He urged the heads of missions to inform their respective governments about the worldwide knowledge-sharing initiative and to encourage them to support it. The meeting was informed that the Ehsaas programme would host a day-long event on January 16 at the Dubai Expo to promote the proclamation.
“The Global Social Protection Knowledge Platform is expected to provide a one-of-a-kind opportunity for government-to-government learning and collaboration, contributing to progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” the statement concluded.
