RAWALPINDI: On Saturday, Murree was declared a calamity-hit area after 19 tourists perished of exposure to the cold and thousands of cars were stranded in the hill station.
The Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel have been called in to help clear the traffic gridlock and transport tourists out of Murree, which has been declared an emergency.
To keep the situation under control, the administration has prevented tourists from entering the Murree and Galiyat regions.
Around 23,000 automobiles have been successfully evacuated from Murree, according to the Rawalpindi deputy commissioner, with about 1,000 vehicles still trapped. He stated that the district administration is working around the clock to carefully evacuate the remaining automobiles.
Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, the Interior Minister, reported earlier today that 16 to 19 individuals died of exposure to the cold in cars stalled in Murree. According to him, the Pakistan Army has dispatched five platoons to assist in the rescue of the stranded tourists.
Hundreds of thousands of cars are travelling to Murree and other upper locations to enjoy the snowfall, according to Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry.
The local administration is unable to give amenities to such a huge number of people, according to the minister, who urged people to postpone their visits to these places for a few days.
