Lahore registers 31 more cases of Omicron variant

LAHORE: In Lahore, the provincial capital of Punjab province, 31 additional Omicron cases have been discovered, increasing the total number of cases of the novel COVID-19 variant to 243 in the city.

According to provincial health department authorities, there have been 251 Omicron cases found in Punjab, with 243 reported from Lahore.

“Stopping the spread of new variants in Lahore has become a struggle for the provincial authorities,” they claimed, adding that the positive rate in the provincial capital had reached 5.7 percent.

Over the previous 24 hours, Pakistan has reported 1,293 COVID-19 cases, the largest number in two months, as officials warned of a fifth wave of infections and made plans to attempt to restrict the fast-spreading Omicron form.

According to the latest numbers released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), a total of 51,045 samples were tested during this time period, with 1,293 proving positive, resulting in a national positivity rate of 2.52 percent, down from 2.32 percent yesterday.

The number of people who have died as a result of the pandemic has risen to 28,961 after six more people died from the virus in the last 24 hours.

Currently, there are 609 COVID-19 patients in critical care at various hospitals around the country.

The immunisation programme against the pandemic has been stepped up in response to the development of COVID-19 cases in the country.

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), up to 160 million people in the country have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

So far, 72,995,114 people have received both COVID-19 doses, whereas 98,863,864 have received only one dose of the vaccine.
