The Omicron version of the coronavirus is on the rise in Pakistan, with cases reported in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.
The Islamabad District Health Officer (DHO) said that 36 more patients tested positive for the Omicron form in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of people infected in the capital to 177.
Islamabad recorded a total of 104 new infections, according to DHO Zaeem Zia. “For clinic diagnoses and contact tracking, 4,411 tests were performed. The COVID19’s fresh wave has just begun, and the positivity [rate] has surged up to 2.36 percent,” he tweeted.
Separately, the Punjab health authorities announced that 42 more people in Lahore had been infected with Omicron.
The number of confirmed cases of the new strain has risen to 219 in Punjab. The majority of these cases have surfaced in the provincial capital, where 212 have been reported.
Omicron is the most transmissible form that spreads quickly, according to Provincial Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid, who advises people to follow SOPs to keep the virus at bay.
For the first time since October 14, 2021, Pakistan recorded more than 1,000 Covid-19 instances in a single day, according to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).
A total of 46,585 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, with 1,085 proving positive, resulting in a countrywide positivity rate of 2.32 percent, up from 1.8 percent yesterday.
