Jamsetji Tata, who established the Tata Group, is the great-grandfather of Ratan Naval Tata. According to the website of the corporation, he was born to Naval and Sooni Tata on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai.

Mr. Tata graduated from Cornell University in the US with a degree in architecture and structural engineering. According to the website, he also enrolled in and successfully completed an Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School.

His career with the Tata Group began in 1962 as an assistant, and in 1971 he was named director-in-charge of the National Radio & Electronics Company Limited. Ratan Tata was named JRD Tata’s successor as chairman of Tata Sons in 1991 when JRD Tata resigned from the position.
