Supreme Court bars cantonment boards from sealing private schools

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday forbade cantonment boards from closing private schools on their property.

The appeal against the closing of private schools in the country’s cantonment boards was heard by the SC bench.

The counsel representing the private schools told the court that there are around 3.7 million children enrolled in the 8,300 private schools located within the cantonment boards’ boundaries, and that the closing of the institutions will have an impact on their education.

The Supreme Court made its decision without hearing from the management of private schools, according to the lawyer. Meanwhile, the parents’ lawyer followed the same script, declaring a civil case closed without hearing their objections.

Later, the SC court sought their answer in the case while asking the cantonment authorities not to seal the private schools. The hearing has been postponed until further notice.

According to the Supreme Court’s instructions, all private schools and colleges operating in cantonment zones were required to relocate their operations out of residential areas by the end of 2021.
