2nd December 1988 marks in the memory of Benazir Bhutto as the first Muslim woman Prime Minister.

Benazir Bhutto became the first woman to lead the government of a country with a majority of Muslims on this day in 1988 when she took the oath of office as Pakistan’s prime minister.

Benazir, a social democrat known as the “torch bearer of democracy,” became the leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) at the age of 29. She was also democratically chosen to be the nation’s leader during the 1988 elections, and on December 2, 1988, she was sworn in as the youngest prime minister in history.

A fearless daughter of the nation who paid the ultimate price for her homeland which has forever etched her memory in the subconscious of Pakistan.

The leader, who is renowned for her captivating demeanour and is widely regarded as a champion of women’s rights, attended both Harvard and Oxford universities.

She was given the nickname “Iron Lady” by India for her strict stance on several regulations.

She spent nine years in exile, and on October 18, 2007, when she returned, the allegations against her were withdrawn. The assassination took place on December 27, 2007.
