Who is General Asim Munir?

Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir is the Pakistan Army’s highest-ranking officer and is currently the Quartermaster General.

Lt Gen Munir enlisted in the military through the Mangla Officers Training School (OTS) programme and was commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment’s 23rd Battalion.

As a brigadier, Lt Gen Munir oversaw soldiers in the Force Command Northern Areas for Gen Bajwa, who was then the Commander of X Corps. Early in 2017, he was named director general of military intelligence. In October 2018, he was named director general of the ISI.

Lt Gen Munir was appointed Gujranwala Corps Commander eight months later. Two years later, he was appointed Quartermaster General at the GHQ.

He is a “Hafiz-e-Quran,” having memorised the Quran while serving as a Lt Colonel in Saudi Arabia.

General Asim Munir is one of the leading candidates for the coveted position of Pakistan’s next Chief of Army Staff, despite his impending retirement on November 27. However, he is all set to take the charge of COAS and is chosen by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

He commanded the XXX Corps in Gujranwala from 17 June 2019 to 6 October 2021. He served as the 23rd Director-General of the ISI until he was replaced with Lt Gen.

Faiz Hameed on 16 June 2019. He is also a holder of the Sword of Honour. Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif appointed him as the 11th Chief of Army Staff on 24 November 2022 for a term of 3 years. He is also a Hafiz-e-Quran.

On December 8, 2022, Asim Munir received the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) award from President Arif Alvi.

At the Aiwan-e-Sadr, the top military officials were given special investitures in front of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif; diplomats, lawmakers, and federal ministers were present during the ceremony.
