LAHORE: As part of attempts to combat the threat of air pollution affecting the provincial capital, the Punjab government barred the entry of passenger vehicles without a “digital fitness certificate” into Lahore on Friday.
The Punjab relief commissioner issued a statement today demanding that automobiles without a fitness certificate be removed from the roadways of Lahore.
Passenger vehicles with a digital fitness certificate will be allowed to enter the city, he said.
Lahore continues to be one of the most polluted cities in the world. On Thursday, the Indian capital city of New Delhi stayed at the top of the list of the world’s most polluted cities, with Lahore coming in second.
According to the Air Quality Index, New Delhi, India, came in #1 with 335 index points, followed by Lahore, Pakistan, with 264 points. Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital, remains on the AQI’s bad air quality list.
The smoke produced by burning crop residues, industries, waste, oil, or tyres enters the atmosphere, and the consequences manifest from the start of winter and last until the conclusion of the season, according to specialists.
As a result, air pollution has reached dangerously high levels, putting the quality of the air at risk.
