ECP notifies a new schedule for LG delimitation

ISLAMABAD: ECP notifies of a new schedule for LG delimitation. Pakistan’s Election Commission has announced a fresh delimitation schedule for the upcoming local government (LG) elections in Islamabad, according to the report.

According to the commission’s statement, delimitation-related work would be completed by January 7, with the initial publication following on January 8.

From January 9 to 23, the ECP will accept objections to the delimitations, with the final publication following on January 16.

ECP notifies of a new schedule for LG delimitation. The election commission will provide the schedule for the Islamabad LG polls as soon as the delimitations are completed.

The modified Islamabad local government (LG) law was approved by the federal cabinet in November. Asad Umar, the Federal Minister for Planning and Development, stated that the new Islamabad LG law will create the most powerful local government in Pakistan’s history.

For the first time, he noted, the administration has submitted legislation that fully complies with Article 140a of the Constitution, which mandates empowered local governments.

At the request of the Sindh government, ECP had postponed the delimitation of constituencies in Sindh province earlier this month, sparking concerns of a delay in the LG elections.

The commission had earlier issued a schedule for the delimitations, instructing the Sindh government to pass legislation on the subject; however, it has yet to be executed due to the governor’s refusal to approve it.

The ECP had announced that the delimitation of union councils, union committees, and wards in the province’s districts would be postponed.

In addition to authorizing delimitation at the UC level, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has prohibited the Sindh government from modifying the boundaries of districts, and urban and rural areas for the delimitation process before the local body elections.

The Sindh administration, according to the ECP, was unable to amend the boundaries of districts, town committees, and municipal committees. The commission stated that the new delimitations will be held in accordance with the prior limits.

It’s worth noting that the local council elections will be announced when Sindh’s constituencies have been redrawn.
