In this new and modern era, no one can imagine that a ban will be imposed on women to visit markets, picnic spots but it is a reality that women of an area of Pakistan’ province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
A jirga of Barang tehsil in Bajaur tribal district of KP, banned women from visiting shops without the company of their male family members, and also slapped a Rs15,000 ban the shopkeepers selling products to such women.
The jirga took this and several other decisions during a meeting held in Memola area, the main town of the region, according to a statement issued.
The statement said the jirga comprising elders Malik Ihsanullah, Malik Hilal Zai, Malik Azizur Rahman and others unanimously decided to ban the local women going to the bazaars alone.
The statement said the decision was meant to maintain “dignity” of women.

It is to mention here that on July 16, a jirga of elders in Salarzai tehsil headed by JUI-F district chief Maulana Abdur Rasheed had banned women from visiting tourist/picnic spots.
However, the decree was later declared illegal by the local authorities after people from different walks of life criticised it.
The statement said that the jirga also imposed Rs50,000 fine on anyone found pushing drugs in the jurisdiction of Barang tehsil.
Furthermore, the statement said that the participants of the jirga also vowed to take strict action against those subverting peaceful environment in the area, especially in Memola Bazaar.
