Media training workshop held on” Gender-sensitive reporting, Gender-based violence awareness”

A three days media training workshop was held for the Journalists on” Gender-sensitive reporting and Gender-based violence awareness” from 12th October to 14th October 2022 by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Commission on the Status of Women (KPCSW) in collaboration with Co-water International.

The Correspondent of DAWN from D I Khan, Muhammad Irfan Mughal represented DAWN in the workshop. More than 30 prominent journalists of the print media including Mr. Zahir Shah Sherazi, Abul Moazzam Turabi from D I Khan participated in the training while Mr. Zahir Shah Sherazi also facilitated the three days of training.

During the training, Dr. Riffat Sardar Chairperson of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Commission on the Status of Women (KPCSW) said, the media can play a positive role in the struggle against violence, therefore, it is necessary to increase the capacity of media persons.

In inaugural ceremony of the training, the keynote speakers Mr. Muhammad Riaz, President Peshawar Press Club, Dr. Riffat Sardar, the Chairperson KPCSW and Ms. Shabina Gulzar, the team leader Co-water International highlighted the gender issues and the role of media in their speeches.

In her remarks Dr. Riffat Sardar, the Chairperson KPCSW said, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Commission on the Status of Women is closely working with different stakeholders to protect and promote women’s rights in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“Media is one of them, which can play a positive role in the struggle against violence, therefore, it is necessary to increase the capacity of media persons on gender-sensitive reporting of GBV cases and promotion of women’s rights in every aspect of life,” she added.

She stated further that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa commission on the status of Women wants to work closely with the media for the better implementation of its mandate.

The president of the Peshawar Press, club Mr. Muhammad Riaz expressed that desk Journalists are unknown heroes. They are responsible to refine the report of the field reporters and make its headings and present them to the readers in an attractive manner.

“Desk journalists are the main force of print media, which needs to be Gender sensitized”, he added.

Ms. Shabina Gulzar, the Team Leader of Co-water International said that the media can play a pivotal role in highlighting women’s issues.

Mr. Muhammad Irfan Mughal, Correspondent of DAWN from D I Khan also highlighted the issues regarding gender difference and also emphasized on women empowerment.

Mr. Zahir Shah Sherazi, facilitated the three days training workshop by following the comprehensive agenda of the training which includes the major topics like Media sensitization on Gender-Based Violence and Gender-related Terminologies, Media Coverage of Gender, Human Rights, Gender-based Violence (GBV) Issues and Gender sensitive issues, Principles for reporting Gender sensitive, GBV Cases, Social media and gender sensitivity, Women representation, Projection, Portrayal in Pakistani Media, Gender-sensitive reporting on women’s Political Participation and Coverage of Elections.

The Chief Guest of the closing ceremony of the training workshop

was Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, the special assistant to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for Information and Public Relations.

Mr. Saif said, the media has a very important role in leading society on the path of development by bringing changes in social attitudes, for which the training of journalists is an important need of the time.

“Knowledge comes from learning, not getting a degree only, you (journalists) have to give information to society with truth, as the truth plays an important role in professionalism,” he added.

Mr. Said further stated that Journalism is an essential and important element of society, journalists can play their role in highlighting the gender issues in society and raise their voices for women’s rights and empowerment.
