Tensions escalate as US stepped forward to help Ukraine

Russia vowed to respond to the West’s growing involvement in the Ukrainian conflict after US President Joe Biden said Washington will provide Kiev with advanced air systems.

Russian state news agency RIA quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Tuesday as saying that a direct conflict with NATO’s US-led military alliance is not in Moscow’s interest but will respond to the growing involvement of the Western countries in the conflict.

“We warn and hope that they realize the danger of an uncontrolled escalation in Washington and other Western capitals,” Ryabkov said, warning of adequate countermeasures.

It came after Biden promised his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy Monday night that the United States would provide Kiev with advanced aircraft systems.

“President Biden is committed to continuing to provide Ukraine with the support it needs to defend itself, including advanced air defense systems,” the White House said in a statement.

Zelenskyy also took to Twitter and said he had a “productive conversation” with the US president and that air defense systems are currently the top priority for their defense cooperation.

“A productive conversation with [US President Joe Biden]. Air defense is currently the top priority of our defense partnership. We also need American leadership to ensure the strong position of the G7 and support our resolution at the UN General Assembly,” he wrote.
