Thailand mourns after horrific incident

Thailand is mourning a horrific gun and knife attack on a day care center in the northeast that killed 37 people, including 23 children.

Parents gathered outside the center on Friday morning, crying and clutching their children’s toys. A former police officer stormed the building Thursday, killing two children as they slept.

Flags across Thailand fly at half-mast as a devastated nation grapples with tragedy.

Police say the 34-year-old attacker committed suicide along with his family following a manhunt. The motive for the attack is not yet known. However, police said the attacker was released in June on charges of drug trafficking.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha and Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn, along with the Queen, are expected to visit the community in Nong Bua Lamphu province on Friday.

Overnight, gold-embellished pink and white coffins containing the children’s bodies were taken to the morgue at Udon Thani Hospital and laid out in rows.
