Oscar winning actors chop off hair in solidarity with Iranian woman
In a video broadcast on Wednesday in support of Iranian protestors, Oscar-winning actors Marion Cotillard and Juliette Binoche as well as other French movie and music celebrities can be seen cutting off their hair.
Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman, died in the morality police’s custody in the middle of September, setting up a weeks-long civil revolt.
Amini was detained for allegedly wearing her hijab incorrectly, revealing too much hair, and going against the rigid dress code of the dictatorship. Protesters are cutting their hair in anger in support of the young woman.
“For freedom,” Binoche exclaimed as she brandished a large handful of her own hair in front of the camera after cutting it off with a pair of scissors.
Protests against the government have swept through dozens of Iranian cities for weeks. Amini’s passing served as a spark for the public’s wrath against political repression, a failing economy, and isolation from the rest of the world, resulting in the country’s longest-lasting unrest in more than a decade.

According to human rights organisations, at least 130 people have perished in Iran as a result of the violent clashes between the government and protestors.
The protests have spread to Iranian colleges and high schools as well as to nations around the world, such as France and Canada.
