UK to face ‘significant risk’ of gas shortage this winter

The “significant risk” of gas shortages this winter, according to Britain’s energy regulator, is caused by Western sanctions that hinder Russia from continuing its gas supply routes to Europe.

In a letter sent on Monday, the British regulator, the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem), warned power company SSE about the grim future and warned that the country would be facing a “gas supply emergency.”

The announcement was made by the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, who blamed Russia’s failure to provide gas through the crucial pipeline to the European Union, the UK, and Canadian sanctions.

He claimed that by prohibiting the pipeline’s components from receiving proper maintenance, the sanctions had caused a “pumping problem.”

Through the Baltic Sea, the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines connect Europe and Russia. The pipelines were affected by unexplained leaks later in September.

Peskov stated that Moscow once more put blame on the West and its sanctions, Ofgem issued a warning: “We need to be prepared for all scenarios this winter.” The collective West is this time represented by the European Union, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

In the event of a gas supply problem, Ofgem and the British National Grid may be required to reduce the amount of gas supplied to gas-fired power plants in order to maintain a sufficient supply for households.
