Pakistan to roll out 5G in Islamabad, Lahore & Karachi by 2023

The rise of 5G technology and its implications

The Pakistani government intends to carry out 5G as soon as possible by 2023, according to information provided by the Ministry of Information and Telecommunication (MOITT). Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore are the first three major cities to receive the launch.

By 2025, only 4% of Pakistan’s whole population, or 65% of people, will be using 5G technology, according to government forecasts.

By the end of 2022, the Global System of Mobile Communications (GSMA) predicts that more than half of Pakistan’s population would be 4G subscribers. Even if these predictions come true, the country would still be three years behind the rest of the globe.

Although 4G adoption rates in the United States have lagged behind those in the rest of the world, it is anticipated that they will pick up speed in the next years.

Despite the fact that 5G will begin to roll out in Pakistan in 2023, only few connections in the years that follow will utilise it.

Despite Pakistan’s growing use of mobile internet, there is still considerable room for improvement. With 123 million active mobile broadband subscribers in the previous month, market penetration was 51%. As a percentage of all mobile customers, more and more users are accessing mobile broadband each year.

According to figures from the GSMA, 4G users made over 50% of all mobile connections worldwide in 2019. In low-middle income countries (LMICs), more than 90% of users had a 3G connection, and 82% had a 4G connection. These countries needed roughly 7 years to implement 4G, compared to about 10 years for 3G.

It is clear that over time, even low-income countries are starting to adopt telecommunications technologies of the next generation more quickly. So it makes sense to assume that Pakistan will adopt 5G technology more quickly than it did 4G.
