Amini was arrested for not wearing the hijab properly and was allegedly brutally beaten. Amini’s death sparked similar protests in Tehran and other cities. Iran has a mandatory hijab law which states that women must always wear the hijab in public.
Protestors in Amini’s motorcade demanded that this law be abolished. The police then shot at the demonstrators and arrested several people. Iranian police denied that Mahsa Amini was beaten, claiming instead that she suffered a heart attack. However, the government shut down the internet in several cities to quell the protests.
Calling hijab a choice is a disservice to women who don’t have the luxury of choice. For the privileged or politically motivated it can be a sign of identity, even self-expression, but for women like Mahsa, it has become a difference between life and death.
I’ve been following @AlinejadMasih’s fight against compulsory hijab and violation of other basic human rights with her fellow Iranians for many years.
I believe it is our moral responsibility to stand with these brave women and men now. #WalkingUnveiled #IranProtests #MahsaAmini https://t.co/wrjvB8tmAZ
