War, pandemic and market gloom have hit the world’s billionaires this year. The 36th annual Forbes ranking of the world’s richest people has 2,668, down 87 from a year ago. They are worth a total of $12.7 trillion, down $400 billion from 2021. The most dramatic declines have been seen in Russia, which has 34 fewer billionaires than last year after the invasion from Ukraine by Vladimir Putin, and in China, where the government is cracking down on the tech company dropping 87 Chinese billionaires from the list.

Still, Forbes found more than 1,000 billionaires richer than a year ago. And 236 newcomers became billionaires last year – including the very first from Barbados, Bulgaria, Estonia and Uruguay. America still leads the world with 735 billionaires who are collectively worth $4.7 trillion, including Elon Musk topping the list of global billionaires for the first time. China (including Macao and Hong Kong) remains number two with 607 billionaires valued at $2.3 trillion. We used stock prices and exchange rates as of March 11, 2022 to calculate net worth.
