Mardan: Education boards merger plan protested

Members of the Board Employees Coordination Council protested outside the press club building against the proposed merger of all education boards in the province in Mardan.

The protest was led by council president If tikhar Yousafzai, the protesters also included students, their parents, and owners and employees of educational institutions.

The protest was also joined by the Mardan city mayor Himayatullah Mayar and All Pakistan Clerk Association provincial president Aurangzeb Kashmiri.

Mr. Yousafzai asked the relevant authorities not to execute the plan to merge all seven education boards insisting the move would create “complications and difficulties” forstudents and their parents.

“Education is a very sensitive sector, so the government should not take decisions about it in haste and unanimously and instead, all stakeholders should be consulted for the purpose,” he said.

The council president said under the Constitution, steps should be taken for the transfer of powers to grassroots level, but the current government was moving towards the centralisation of its organisations and autonomous bodies.

The mayor warned if the government didn’t withdraw board merger decision, street protests would be staged.
