Pakistani vice-captain Shadab Khan, who was the top scorer with 36 points, played down the altercation on the pitch, saying it happened “in the heat of the day” and is best left on the pitch.

Meanwhile, the Afghan skipper who was manoeuvring into the abyss said he had no idea what was going on in between.

However, the incident sparked violence among fans in the stands, with some social media videos showing fans using stadium seats to beat each other up.

Former managing director of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), Shafiq Stanikzai, lashed out at Asif Ali for his actions, saying the Pakistani batsman’s response was nothing more than “stupidity”. Stanikzai also requested that Asif be banned from the rest of the current championship.

“This is stupidity on an extreme level from Asif Ali and he should be banned for the rest of the tournament. Every bowler has the right to celebrate, but being physical is not acceptable at all,” he said. wrote Stanikzai on Twitter.
