Squid Game wins early Emmy prizes.
The first non-English-language programme to contend for the top drama award is “Squid Game”.
Prior to the competition for the finest drama on television next week, the South Korean serial Squid Game won its first Emmy honours on Sunday, taking home an acting prize along with three other medals.
The dystopian Netflix Inc. series’ Ji Young, a young woman who is compelled to compete in a perilous search for wealth after being released from prison, received Lee You-mi the award for guest drama actress at the Creative Arts Emmys.
The actress spoke briefly in Korean before yelling in English, “I’m so very happy!” as she accepted the award on stage at a theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
In addition to guest actors, the Creative Arts Emmys honoured behind-the-scenes talents like sound engineers, hair stylists, and cinematographers.
At a televised red carpet ceremony on September 12, the lead actor and other prizes will be given out.
The first non-English language television programme to receive a nomination for the highest drama award is Squid Game.
Netflix’s Stranger Things, which won five Creative Arts honours, including music supervision, for a season in which the song Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush from 1985 was used, is a competitor for the prize.
The song reached the top of the music charts after being included in the series.
One prize was given out on Sunday for casting in the media dynasty drama Succession from HBO, which is also up for best drama.
