It was observed that thousands of students, including those who scored more than 95% in the recently announced annual entrance exam results, have failed the Government College University Lahore (GCUL) entrance test.
According to sources, the university decided to take another admission test after around 13,500 of the 15,000 applicants were declared not admitted to the first test. The decision was made because the number of eligible students was less than the total number of places available in the university’s intermediate grades, the sources say.
Candidates who failed the college entrance test reportedly included a large number of position holders in the entrance exam.
A number of students who had scored high marks in the annual entrance exam of Punjab’s nine secondary and secondary education councils complained on the university’s social media that they passed a tough entrance test.
GCUL is one of the best educational institutions in the country with thousands of students from all over Punjab and other parts of the country applying for admission into the colleges every year.
Fierce competition between applicants for university admissions is regularly observed, but in recent years the number of students, reaching up to 95% nationally, has increased considerably.
As a result, the competition for admission to GCUL and other renowned institutions has also become tougher. Also last year, applicants had to face rigorous selection criteria, but this time only 1,500 out of 15,000 applicants passed the entrance test.
Some candidates have also requested that the entrance test be repeated in view of the dismal results. “I got 96% of the votes in the matrix. How is it possible that I did not pass the admission test,” said one candidate, Muhammd Asim, commenting on the results.
He said GCUL would be recruiting visiting faculty this year and that the new teachers had checked the admission test answer sheets. The test model had also changed, he said.
On the other hand, a senior GCUL official told The Express Tribune: “The situation is more difficult for us because we cannot fill the announced seats and this could affect the financial position of the college. This is why the administration has decided to organize an entrance test again this year “.
He said it was a worrying development that students who got up to 95% of the board exams did not pass the college entrance test, which included questions about basic things. “It is also beyond us how these students have achieved high marks in the entrance exams,” she noted.
“However, the situation is disappointing and the Ministry of Education needs to review the signal evaluation system,” the official added.
According to the GCUL administration, students can apply for admission until September 8th.
When contacted, GCUL Vice Chancellor Dr Asghar Zaidi said, “Students fail because they are not taught to write an essay based on their own knowledge. The majority of them are good at remembering lessons without learning much from what is in their textbooks. You don’t learn anything about a subject beyond a single textbook.
