Education in Pakistan – A crisis overlooked

Agreement for the launch of satellite education TV channels in the nation was inked by the Federal Education Ministry and Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU).

The agreement was inked earlier today at a formal ceremony in Islamabad by Federal Education Minister Ahsan Iqbal and AIOU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Zia-ul-Qayyum.

In accordance with the terms of the deal, AIOU will soon begin broadcasting four satellite education TV channels, which will provide continuous coverage of educational programming to a potential audience of millions of students throughout the world.

Costing a total of Rs. 570 million, the introduction of the channels might take up to six months until they are available nationwide.

During his remarks, the Minister of Education asked the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to support AIOU’s efforts to provide educational television programming on satellite platforms.

The Education Minister’s Additional Secretary has been told to go to work on launching the TV channels as soon as possible and to make sure that they go live on the scheduled date.

Former Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood started a radio station and a teleschool on PTV during the first wave of Coronavirus.

Millions of pupils whose access to education had been disrupted by the shutdown of schools because of the Coronavirus benefited from these programmes.
