Sindh govt bans pillion riding for seven days

The Sindh government has banned pillion riding for seven days, from the 6th to the 12th of Muharram, including in the provincial capital Karachi.

At the request of the Inspector General of Police, the Sindh government prohibited pillion riding (IGP).

The ban will go into effect on August 4 and will last until August 10 (Muharram 6-12), according to a notification from the Sindh Home Department, with some people exempt.

It will not apply to journalists, people with disabilities, the elderly, women, security professionals, or minors, according to the notification.

“…the Government of Sindh is satisfied that immediate measures are required to maintain law and order throughout the province of Sindh and to avoid any untoward incident/mishap,” the notification stated.

The ban has been enacted under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), and violators will face consequences, according to the notification.

The federal government has declared a two-day holiday for Ashura (Muharram 9-10 or August 8-9), and banks will also be closed on those dates.
