ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court ordered Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani to surrender to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in assets beyond means case on Friday.
Durrani appeared in the Supreme Court after evading the anti-corruption watchdog for a month and a half. He had gone into hiding after his bail was revoked by the Sindh High Court (SHC).
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Umar Ata Bandial, heard the PPP leader’s petition for pre-arrest bail. His lawyer asked the court to grant bail so that his client could appear in front of the appropriate trial court.
The Supreme Court rejected the plea and ordered Durrani to surrender to the bureau.
“We have to proceed with the case in accordance with the law,” Justice Bandial stated.
“Once you surrender, we will hear your bail petition,” Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, a member of the bench, said.
Despite the fact that his bail had been canceled by the Sindh High Court, the accused did not surrender to the NAB, according to Justice Mansoor Ali Shah.
The lawyer indicated that his client had appeared in front of the Supreme Court and requested that the speaker be given bail. The court, according to Justice Sajjad, will not accept such a submission.
In an assets reference filed by the corruption watchdog, the Sindh High Court (SHC) denied interim release to provincial assembly speaker Agha Siraj Durrani on October 14.
The SHC, on the other hand, granted bail to Mr. Durrani’s wife, three daughters, a son, and two others in the same case. After that, a NAB team stormed Durrani’s home to arrest him, but it had to leave empty-handed because he was not present. Since then, there has been no indication of his location.
