Petroleum is derived from the words “petra,” meaning rock and “oleum,” meaning oil. Crude petroleum is extracted from land or sea and refined through distillation. In its raw form, it contains solid, liquid, and gaseous hydrocarbons.

Latest Petrol and Diesel Price Update

The federal government announced a reduction in fuel prices for the next fortnight. Petrol prices have been been set to Rs263.45 per litre. High-speed diesel (HSD) price is now Rs279.65 per litre.

Superior kerosene oil (SKO) is now at Rs176.81 per litre, while light diesel oil (LDO) is now Rs159.76 per litre. These new rates were implemented following recommendations from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) and relevant government ministries.

Impact on Households and Transportation

Petrol is widely used in motorcycles, rickshaws, and private vehicles, so changes in petrol prices directly affect middle- and lower-income households. Diesel fuel powers heavy transport, agricultural machinery, and trains, making it highly inflationary. Price changes in HSD influence the cost of food and essential goods across the country.

Taxes and Levies on Petroleum Products

Although general sales tax (GST) is zero on petroleum products, the government charges:

Petrol and High Octane: Rs80.52 per litre (including petrol levy and climate support levy)

Diesel: Rs79.50 per litre

Climate Support Levy: Rs2.50 per litre included in above charges

Custom Duty: Rs17-18 per litre on petrol and diesel, regardless of local production or imports

Distribution and Sale Margins: Approximately Rs17 per litre go to oil companies and their dealers

These taxes and levies significantly contribute to the final retail price of fuel.

Trends and Factors Affecting Petrol Prices

Petrol and diesel prices fluctuate due to a combination of domestic and international factors, including:

  1. Global oil price changes
  2. Geopolitical tensions affecting supply
  3. Domestic economic conditions and taxation policies
  4. Exchange rate fluctuations and import dependency
  5. Monitoring these factors helps consumers anticipate future price changes and plan their household budgets accordingly.

Historical Perspective on Petroleum

Petroleum usage dates back to 347 AD in China, while Canada started commercial production in 1858. Russia became a leading producer in the early 20th century. Today, the United States, Russia, and Saudi Arabia are the top producers, and around 80% of global oil reserves are in the Middle East, mainly Qatar, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
