The youth's bulge: Pakistan's demographic dilemma

As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, Pakistan finds itself at a critical crossroads, grappling with the challenges and opportunities presented by its burgeoning youth population.

The numbers are staggering: approximately 64% of our population is under the age of 25, with 33% falling within the 15-29 age bracket. This demographic phenomenon, known as the “youth bulge,” demands urgent attention and strategic planning.

On one hand, this young population presents a tremendous opportunity for economic growth and development. A dynamic workforce of around 75 million individuals aged 15-59 has the potential to drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and productivity. However, this potential remains largely untapped due to systemic issues.

Pakistan’s literacy rate for individuals aged 15-24 stands at 74%, indicating a significant skills gap. The unemployment rate among youth hovers around 17%, leaving many young people disillusioned and idle. This vulnerability can have far-reaching consequences, including radicalization and social unrest.

To harness the demographic dividend, Pakistan must prioritize education reform, vocational training, and job creation. Initiatives like the National Youth Policy and Prime Minister’s Youth Program are steps in the right direction, but more needs to be done.

We urge policymakers to:

1. Invest in quality education and skills development programs.
2. Promote entrepreneurship and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
3. Address healthcare challenges and mental health issues.
4. Foster civic engagement and empower youth participation.

The youth bulge is both a challenge and an opportunity. It’s time for Pakistan to capitalize on its demographic potential, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.

THE WAY FORWARD

Pakistan’s youth deserve attention, investment, and empowerment. We must act now to:

• Provide quality education and skills training.
• Create employment opportunities.
• Promote innovation and entrepreneurship.
• Foster inclusive growth and social cohesion.

The future of Pakistan depends on it.
