History for socialist Chile: Revolutionary politics in an age of global capitalism seems a perplexing proposition. If you debate with someone on whether it is possible to usher a revolution in our country or not, he will certainly laugh at first and then dub it a moonshine. Due to myriad factors, our youth is downcast and dispirited and believes that nothing is going to change in our country. Of course, it’s the result of an oppressive system that stands out on the evil and vicious principles of economic inequality. Simultaneously, our youth have lost their creative spark, a hope, in their lifelong struggle to make themselves fit in order to survive as our society is based on Darwin’s shoddy scholarship of “survival of the fittest.”
But all is not lost! The recent magnificent victory of the left under the leadership of a 35-year-old law student Gabriel Boric has once again ignited the dead debate for a change. Boric who has always been a great critic of right-wing politics has defeated 55-year-old candidate Jose Antonio Kast and becomes the youngest president ever in the history of Chile. Now at last the oppressed and third-world countries can see the light at the end of the tunnel who are suffering from abject poverty, unemployment, and market-oriented policies.
“Do not be afraid of the youth changing the country,” said Boric after winning the elections. He has also pledged to ‘bury neoliberalism’ and end inequality.
Boric’s party has not come on the scene all of a sudden as they have a long history of protests against the brutal policies of the government. They have successfully organized their party workers as it’s the most difficult milestone to achieve for any revolutionary party. Chanting slogans on the roads without any ideology and groundwork is equivalent to strengthening the same system of oppression.
Lenin very rightly said that without a revolutionary theory, there can be no revolutionary moment. So Pakistani youth and the leftist parties need to understand this. Oppressors are organized everywhere, it’s we the people who are not conscious of their tactics of controlling the people. Finally, what could be a better message than Eqbal Ahmed’s words for the oppressed communities: Organize, Organize, organize.
