Why is Rabi ‘Al-Awwal important to Muslims?

Unlike other holy months in the Islamic calendar, such as Dhul Hijjah and Ramadan, Rabi’ Al-Awwal is important, but there are no specific or mandatory acts of worship for Muslims during this blessed month.

Instead, Rabi’ Al-Awwal is another opportunity to reflect on the importance of our Prophet (pbuh) and the role he has played for Muslims throughout the vastness of Islamic history.

It is also the month in which the beloved holy prophet died.

There are so many precious and beautiful Sunnahs of the Blessed Prophet that we can harness and strive to embody throughout the year.

Here are some easy-to-integrate Sunnahs to start building successful habits with this Rabi ‘Al-Awwal:

  • Take care of orphans
The Prophet (pbuh) was born an orphan and said in a famous hadith

“Me and the one who cares for an orphan will be together in Heaven shortly,” and he (SAW) held his two fingers together to illustrate. (Bukhari)

  • Fasting
Fasting on the days of the Sunnah (including Mondays and Thursdays)

“The proceedings are presented on Monday and Thursday. So I like when my deeds are presented during the fast.” (Tirmidhi)

All such sunna of the Holy Prophet paved the way for Muslims to spend an ideal life in this world and prepare themselves for the hereafter.

The moon of the holy month of Rabi ul Awal was sighted in Pakistan on September 27.

Muslims in Pakistan and around the world commemorate 12 Rabi ul Awal as the birthday of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The streets of Pakistan are bathed in colourful lights just as the sighting of the moon marks the first day of the holy month and remains the same throughout the month.

People light up streets, buildings, and mosques across the country with beautiful lights and banners to celebrate.

The government, religious organisations, Milad committees, and individuals plan a large number of activities each year, including processions, seminars, lectures and discussion programs to mark the annual event.
